2012: Ten games you should've seen

Sports has a banner year. Well, it always does. What does not happen most of the time are athletes falling from grace, and not by failure inside the court: Lance Armstrong, for example. But that's not the point of this post. (That's for later.)

The point of this post is to relive the greatest sporting moments, as they happened. Yes, I am being cheesy. As is customary, let's have two lists: one that did not involve a Filipino, and another that involves at least one of us. This list involves matches that didn't involve a single drop of Filipino blood. At least that's what we can confirm.

10. Kansas 64, Ohio State 62, national semifinals of the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball tournament, at the Mercedes Benz Superdome
One-time Talk 'N Text import JJ Sullinger's little brother stayed in The Ohio State University coz he wants to win at every level there is. Unfortunately, the perky hoopsters from Kansas were in the way. Thomas Robinson had something else in mind.

9. Andy Murray def. Roger Federer 6-2, 6-1, 6-4, gold medal game of the Olympics men's singles tournament, at the All-England Club
IT'S AS IF ANDY WON WIMBLEDON. Well, sorta.
8. New York Knicks 89, Miami Heat 87, Game 4 of the Eastern Conference First Round, at the Madison Square Garden
Hey at least the Knicks finally won their first playoff game ever since they dropped "erbocker" from their name. Kidding.

7. Mexico 2, Brazil 1, gold medal game of the Olympics men's football tournament
The Olympic gold is the only piece of championship that the Brazilians still have to win that is available for them. Even the likes of Ronaldinho failed to power them to a gold medal game in 2008. This time, Brazil sent in their best Olympic team... only to be thwarted by Oribe Peralta's first minute goal. And that was Mexico's only gold medal.

6. Floyd Mayweather def. Miguel Cotto via unanimous decision for the WBA Super and WBC Diamond light middleweight championships at the MGM Grand Garden Arena
Everyone was hoping against hope that either Cotto will find within himself a nasty punch that'll put Mayweather to sleep, or that the judges are too stoned to judge correctly.... the thing is they were stoned a month later.

5. United States 4, Canada 3, via extra time, semifinals of the Olympics women's football tournament
Seriously, watching this is like watching dudes play. Alex Morgan's last gasp winner at the final minute of stoppage time of the extra time, plus the dubious foul that led to the Abby Wambach's penalty is the stuff that lore is made.

4. United States 107, Spain 100, gold medal game of the Olympics men's basketball tournament, at the O2.
Let's face it. Serge Ibaka should've logged more minutes, and the Spaniards were within screaming distance (worse than shouting distance, but better than yelling distance) when the both Gasols were on the court. When both were benched at the start of the second half, that's when the Americans pulled away, and the Spaniards can't catch up.

3. Chelsea 1, Bayern Munich 1 (Chelsea 4-3 in penalties), UEFA Champions League final, at the Allianz Arena

Chelsea had one corner. Bayern Munich had 20. Chelsea scored on that lone corner to tie the game, and win the game via penalties, thanks to Didier Drogba's kicker. The commentators were saying that Chelsea were playing a shitty game but it seemed that they were destined to win.

2. Denver Broncos 29, Pittsburge Steelers 23 via overtime, NFL Divisional Playoffs, at the Mile High Stadium
ZOMG TEBOWMANIA! JESUS POSSESSED TEBOW'S HAND! MY GOD ALMIGHTY!

1. Manchester City 2, Queens Park Rangers 1, final matchday of the Premier League, at Etihad Stadium

For Manchester City, a win would give them their first title ever since God knows when. Anything else and the hated red team from the other side (actually, outside) of town will win. For Queens Park Rangers, a loss might relegate them to the lower division. Man City looked like on their way for their title, until QPR scored two successive goals, and now, Man City have to score twice to win the title.

All was lost as QPR looked set to win (no matter the result by now, they're safe) as stoppage time kicked in. All this time, Man City had the monopoly of possession and corners. At the first minute of stoppage time, Mario Balotelli almost scored one. Then a minute later, Edin Dzeko leveled the score at 2-2. The Etihad was brimming with tension.

Sergio Aguero didn't need the help of a corner as he dribbled the ball all the way to the box, and scored what could be the title winner. It's the stuff dreams are made of, aside from Butters' creamy goo. Only that the referee had to build up the tension so bad he ended the match after seven long minutes of stoppage time. That's the way to win a championship.

2011 yearender: Gabi ng Parangal, local sports edition

2011 came and went like Asiong Salonga killing the bad guys then being killed himself (OOPS SPOILER ALERT!) so let's end the year with a completely irrelevant conclusion of the already-stated premise with some awards they had not come up with -- so yes, no team, player of the year and that shit. This time let's go on local sporting events. Ten categories of pure unadulterated sporting achievements.

Game of the Year: UAAP 2nd round of Ateneo vs Adamson.

It's a tough choice between 2nd round of Ateneo vs Adamson and the UFL Cup semifinal between Kaya and Loyola Meralco, but I had to give it to the Ateneo-Adamson game, solely because more people know the Ateneo Blue Eagles exist than the Loyola Meralco Sparks.

Series of the year: 2011 PBA Governors Cup Finals.
It's like the 2011 NBA Finals: Everybody picked the Heat to win; in this case, everyone picked Talk 'N Text to win, but Chot Reyes happened. Close second was the Philippines vs Sri Lanka series for World Cup qualifying.

Game Nobody Knew Happened of the Year: UFL Cup Semifinal, Loyola Meralco vs Kaya
The 3,000-man girl strong Rizal Stadium got wet with delight when Papa Phil scored a hat-trick.

The Kerby Raymundo Award for Best Quote of the Year: Ato Agustin
For saying, in Chot Reyes' face, that he's gay.

We Did Something but the Press Didn't Care Award: Smart Gilas
The long shots went to the semifinals of the FIBA Asia Championship. That's like a Southeast Asian team making it to the AFC Asian Cup, without hosting it.

We Did Nothing but the Press Cared Award: Azkals U-23
Let's face it: Two networks had parallel coverages on a team that finished dead last.

We Should've Joined WilTime Big Time Award: Philippine national dragon boat team
Not to rain on their parade or anything, but did the international dragon boat championship even made it to the sports page of Tampa newspapers?

The Graham Lim Award for Incompetence: The PSC and POC
For screwing up, yet again, the country's already screwed up sports program, if it exists.

The Sporting Event of the Year: Smart All-Star Weekend
Kobe Bryant live in the flesh. It's like David Beckham live in the flesh, in 1998, not 2011. And oh, don't forget Kobe had 2011 MVP Derrick Rose, and the 2012 MVP Kevin Durant in tow.

Bastardization of the Year: Smart Araneta Coliseum
"Araneta Coliseum" is a smart name. The new name smells like the Dunkin Donuts Center, or the EnergySolutions Arena.

2009 yearender: Top 10 local sports stories

Local sports had their own fair share of shining moments this year: epic (I love that word) upsets, dominating performances, comebacks deserving of a Guinness, and sheer stupidity worth watching a YouTube over and over again.

#10: Lady Archers are the volley queens
Thanks to the Shakey's V-League, everyone now cares about the UAAP's women's volleyball championship. La Salle dispatched Adamson in 4 sets (the last set with a scoreline of 25-13), and FEU returned the favor with a dissimilar 4-set win over UST. MVP Manilla Santos and Rookie of the Year Melissa Gohing faced off with best setter May Morada, all-around dependable girl Rachel Anne Daquis, and upcoming star Cherry Vivas. Game 1 went the distance with FEU winning. But La Salle came out with a dominating performance in Game 2 to force a winner-take-all Game 3. Inside an overflowing and newly-renamed Filoil Flying V Arena, the Lady Archers outlasted the Lady Tamaraws, who had to play with Daquis riding the bench to hand La Salle their fifth women's volley title.

#9: Seventh heaven for Pac-Man
Manny Pacquiao ended the 2009 leg of his "North American tour" with an 11th round knockout of Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico. Cotto wasn't even punching in the latter stages of the fight, and Kenny Bayless took pity on the Puerto Rican. Twitter even had a "#cottosface" hash tag to celebrate the momentous event. Even Cotto's mom wouldn't like #cottosface.

#8: Uber epic Green fail
Ah, the usual palusots of people: many veterans left so we have a crappy team. That argument only holds water if there are no replacements, or "rookies" (for some reason, I don't like using that word in an amateur, or in this case, collegiate, context. Use freshmen, sophomore and the like instead.) that came in. And with DLSU's awesome recruiting capabilities, even PBA teams would turn green with envy, you can't count out DLSU in any season. But alas, one of their recruits came back to the loving arms of his father (pardon the pun), and while the remaining recruits weren't bad (in fact they were, as expected, impressive), the vets who remained had such crappy performances supporters were wondering what Franz Pumaren was thinking when he placed those "vets" in pivotal minutes. And with the last game vs. NU where DLSU could've
forged a playoff vs. UST and/or Adamson for the last playoff berth, the Green Archers proved to everyone that they were not worthy of a playoff spot. At least for this year.

#7: Bella Swan would proud of the Tigresses
The Tigresses made the Shakey's V-League their playground by sweeping all two championships given by the league. UST won the 1st conference on 3 sets, with the 2 winning sets via a 3 sets to none scoreline, beating the San Sebastian Lady Stags. On the 2nd conference, the Tigresses didn't give the Lady Falcons a chance, sweeping the series 2-0 on identical 3-1 scores. Rhea Dimaculangan, Mary Jean Balse and Aiza Maizo made UST an unstoppable force in the V-League, now with the leagie-high 5 championships.

#6: MVP for the Ages
PLDT head honcho Manny V. Pangilinan, which also makes him team owner of the Talk 'N Text PBA team, had a banner year in sports, with the only disappointment coming from the Red and White school near the Palace. In the PBA, the Tropang Texters, relied on, ironically a Lasallian, Mark Cardona to carry the cudgels for the team. Cardona had a monster semifinal series against San Miguel, in which he capped off a three-pointer to seal the deal, and the defensive rebound as insurance to put the Texters in the Finals. Facing the Aces, which lead 3-2, Cardona scored game high on points for the rest of the way to avenge the then Phone Pals' loss against the Aces in the 2007 Fiesta Conference. Cardona's exploits gave him his first pro Finals MVP award.

#5: Sheer Blue dominance
If this Ateneo team failed to win it all this year, it would've been the epic disappointment of the decade, the epic upset for the team that would've done the feat, and MVP, in the words of the immortal Green (Over)Mind, MVP would've plucked Pat Riley out of retirement to coach Ateneo next season. What did the Blue Eagles is probably the most formidable starting line-up in the latter half of the decade: Al-Hussaini, Baclao, Buenafe, Reyes and Tiu, plus sixth man Salamat, who'd be a starter in any other collegiate team in the country.

#4: The return of the Beermen
Like Ateneo, San Miguel is a team built to win championships. However, with the fickle nature of the PBA playoffs (virtually ALL teams participate, leading to upsets), San Miguel has won only once in the two-conference era, despite finishing within the top three after the elimination round in five occasions. However, they did finish #1 in the 2009 Fiesta Conference, and had a relatively easy semifinal series against the Burger King Whoppers, coached by old adversary Yeng Guiao. Facing sister team Barangay Ginebra, and I won't imply cooking happened, the Beermen showed that their latest championship was a well-deserved one, winning the last two games being behind 2-3 in the series, and the seventh game was a dominating performance, even Ginebra fans stayed for the awarding ceremonies.

#3: Bata and Django weave their magic
The World Cup of Pool arrives at Asia, and the Philippines has been a constant host of WPA events. Pinoys flocked to cheer to their two teams, Philippines "A" of Ronnie Alcano and Dennis Orcollo, and Philippines "B" of Efren Bata Reyes and Django Bustamante. In the end, only one Philippine team remained, and Bata and Django summed it up: they weren't playing for themselves, they played for the country. And they won to the delight of the fans who stayed late at night to watch the final.

#2: The fall of the team from the West Coast
What do Sudan Daniel, Rome dela Rosa, and Ginno Soliman have in common, aside from playing for San Beda? They all came from the city of Angels -- no, not Angeles City, but from Los Angeles, California. The home of the Lakers and Kobe. And they fell to the Central Luzon Combine called the San Sebastian Golden Stags, and a Canadian by the name of Jonathan Semira.

#1: Pac-Man demolishes a white dude
There's something about white guys and boxing. The Klitschko brothers are the only white boxers that had been universally recognized as heavyweight champions since God knows when. In the lower divisions, Hispanics, Blacks and Asians dominate the field. Americans had fared badly -- white Americans have been searching for the "Great White Hope." The Brits produced one, by the name of Ricky Hatton. And knowing the rowdy nature of British fans, Hatton acquired a massive fanbase. And with Pinoys not left behind, they all rallied behind the country's "National Fist". Americans were reduced to mere spectators as two foreigners slugged it out in boxing's capital -- Las Vegas. Too bad the preview shows on HBO were longer -- the fight lasted a mere 6 minutes in boxing time.

Decadender: 10 greatest Pinoy college hoops playoff games

Ah, the decade of the 2000s (2000 to 2009), included the tail end of the second millennium (2000 -- the new millennium actually began on 2001, unless Jesus was born at year 0) brought Pinoy college hoops to new heights: the revival of the Ateneo-La Salle rivalry, with FEU and UST figuring in the mix, epic Letran-PCU battles, the resurrection of San Beda's basketball program, and suspensions due to forged documents. The old decade ended with a glimmer of hope -- an impending expansion of the oldest collegiate league, and UE on the verge of winning it all, well, they're always on the verge of winning it all so...

#10: Game 2 of the 2005 UAAP Finals: FEU 73, La Salle 71
There was one reason why Arwind Santos didn't go pro in 2005: to avenge what happened to the Tams in 2004. Arwind got his wish when the FEU and La Salle met again in a rematch the year before: only this time, FEU now has to counter the exploits of Joseph Yeo.

In this season, FEU, La Salle and Ateneo were the top 3 teams, but only two teams will advance to the Finals: FEU was beaten by Ateneo at the tail end of the eliminations but that wasn't enough as they left the Blues and the Greens behind. The arch-rivals faced each other in a playoff for the second seed, and La Salle maintained their mastery over the school from Katipunan with a blowout win. The Archers ended the Eagles' misery with another blowout at the semifinals to forge a Finals rematch with the Tamaraws, who were taken to the limit by the UE Red Warriors.

Game 1 ended with the heroics of Arwind Santos in the final minutes; This was also the game where Lasallians would rather forget(?) when Manny Salgado hit Arwind at the back of his head, then ran away screaming like a little girl .Arwind again saved the team in Game 2, also in the final play to deny the Green Archers a win in the Finals series. The next day, the La Salle scandal was exposed in the papers. No, it was not the sex scandal.

#9: Game 1 of the 2003 UAAP semifinals: La Salle 76, Ateneo 72
Everyone from Ateneo and La Salle in 2003 wanted an Ateneo-La Salle finals (but they'll answer you that they'll take any opponent, but deep down inside, they craved for it.), but Arwind Santos and FEU had other plans. And they along with UE tied with Ateneo for first; La Salle had their worst season in Final Four history -- bad enough for a 7-7 record and a #4 seed. Ateneo got the #1 seed, FEU defeated UE in the playoff for #2, and the Ateneo-La Salle Finals would have to wait. Hey, at least there'll be an Ateneo-La Salle semifinals.

Unlike in 2001 (see #7), LA Tenorio is now a seasoned UAAP veteran, and La Salle was in a "rebuilding" mode. Despite being in a rebuilding mode, La Salle surprised everybody with a spirited semifinals, until it got too spirited in which LA Tenorio punched Jerwin Gaco at his side, and Ryan Arana was in his usual wasted self. Ejections and twenty real-time minutes later, the game resumed and La Salle forced a Game 2. With Tenorio and Arana suspended, Ateneo won to face FEU in the Finals, and series that they will lose.

#8: Game 1 of the 2000 NCAA Finals: CSB 66, San Sebastian 64
2000 was the Green Year: La Salle won the men's and women's UAAP basketball championships, and CSB qualified for the NCAA Finals for the first time in their history, and only in their second year in the league, under probation.

CSB was led by he triumvirate of Mark Magsumbol, Sunday Salvacion and Jondan Salvador, Baste had Christian Coronel and Mark Macapagal. The Stags led in the early going, but CSB cashed in at the second half in what appeared to be an easy win over last year's #1 seed (unceremoniously booted out by fourth-seeded Letran Knights in the semifinals). SSC-R prevented a rout when CSB started throwing the ball like hell, and the Stags led 64-61. But Al Magpayo, the NCAA Rookie of the Year, scored on a 3-point play off a Macapagal foul to tie the game 64-all. With forty seconds left, and the Stags gave away the possession. Magsumbol drove from the weak side, and scored on another lay-up. Coronel raced towards the other side to force OT, but was thwarted to hand CSB game 1 of the series. CSB blew out the Stags in Game 2 to clinch their still only NCAA championship for the school.

#7: Game 3 of the 2001 UAAP Finals: La Salle 74, Ateneo 68
La Salle are the three-time defending champions. They faced two different opponents in three years, and they vanquished them all. Ateneo was in a 13-year championship drought, and coach Joe Lipa's job hangs in the balance. Ateneo gave La Salle a scare in Game 1, but Ateneo broke through with a Game 2 win thanks to a Magnum Membrere trey that Ren-Ren Ritualo wasn't able to answer at the other end to force Game 3.

In Game 3, it was the tale of two players: Carlo Sharma scoring 22 points, and 11 points in the payoff period that negated rookie LA Tenorio's 30 points -- yes, 30 points for a rookie in Game 3 -- to give La Salle the third four-peat in the UAAP.

#6: Game 1 of the 2006 UAAP Finals: Ateneo 73, UST 72
Despite the Ateneans' constant downplaying of their chances for the 2006 season, the Blue Eagles suffered only two defeats during the abbreviated elimination round thanks to La Salle's suspension: an inconsequential game against UE, and an overtime loss against their Finals opponents UST. Thomasians were just giddy to be in the Finals, having to go through three games to get there.

Ateneo and UST played a see-saw game all throughout, and again it hinged on the final possession of the game for each team: Ateneo lead by one point when Jervy Cruz had a tough time entering Ateneo's interior defense. He kicked out the ball to Allan Evangelista, who was covered well by Doug Kramer himself. The UST captain sank a fadeaway jumper to put UST up by one, but there was still a fraction of a second remaining.

Norman Black then devised what could've been the most exhilarating play of the decade. Macky Escalona inbounded the ball, Chris Tiu set a pick to separate Japs Cuan and Doug Kramer from each other, and Escalona gave the ball to Kramer for a wide-open lay-up to give Ateneo a 1-0 series lead.

#5: Game 1 of the 2004 NCAA semifinals: Letran 65, PCU 64
Letran wanted a back-t0-back title run, after a masterful conquest of San Sebastian a season earlier. However, two of the newest schools in the league, PCU and UPHSD finished tied for first. Letran had to settle for a semifinal meeting with PCU, having to win twice. They could've finished easily in the top 2 but hot-headed Ronjay Enrile was suspended for choking a San Sebastian player in eliminations.

On this game, Letran and PCU forged what could've been college basketball's epic rivalry of the decade, only that PCU's juniors teams did something silly and wasted a perfect opportunity to lay the foundations of a collegiate basketball powerhouse team. In one of the first semifinal games in years to be played at the Araneta Coliseum, the Dolphins and the Knights contested every possession like its their last. It all boiled down to the final possession of the game, with the Knights of the offensive and down by two points. Jonathan Aldave, one of the pieces of Letran's balanced attack of the decade, let go a three-pointer at the final buzzer. It went in, and Letran extended the series to a deciding game at the Rizal Memorial, where they were upended by the Dolphins in OT, with Enrile back in the lineup, on their way to their only NCAA championship.

#4: Game 3 of the 2004 UAAP Finals: La Salle 68, FEU 65
Ateneo-La Salle rivalry? FEU and La Salle also revived their own rivalry (a rivalry one side rather downplays) in the 2000s. FEU and La Salle peaked at the middle of the decade, with two consecutive Finals match-ups. In the first, FEU and La Salle needed the full three games to arrive at a conclusion.

Game 3 was what the scalpers wanted, an epic game to end the season. It all had the ingredients of a rivalry: teams that hate each other, Anton Montinola, and rich people behaving badly. And yes, an epic game to boot, too. FEU were the defending champions, and La Salle just came from a "rebuilding" season to qualify for the Finals anew. The Tams had Arwind Santos and Denok Miranda. The Lasallians already lost Ren-Ren Ritualo and Mike Cortez to the pros. But they still had Mark Cardona, Joseph Yeo and from "their" farm team at Mendiola, JV Casio. Arwind had his usual game, but the vaulted La Salle offense kept them in the running. It all came down to La Salle's last possession with game tied at 68-all. JV Casio shot a three-pointer over an outstretched hands of an FEU defender. It went in. FEU sued for time, and on their last possession, Denok Miranda missed on a desperation drive to the hoop. The teams were still scrambling for the rebound when the horn sounded, and the Archers won anew.

Of course, due to the Benitez/Gatchalian scandal (that sounded nasty), La Salle had to surrender their championship. To the FEU Tamaraws. But still, Arwind held off his pro debut for another season because of this (see #10).

#3: Game 3 of the 2006 NCAA Finals: San Beda 68, PCU 67
Bill Velasco said, he had never seen a multitude of grown men cry, until this. San Beda was on a 28-year championship drought. Last time they were champions, martial law ruled the land. Coming into the mix in the middle of 2005 after SBC had a 0-6 start, Koy Banal led the Lions to a two-game winning streak, only to be halted by Letran in 2005. Banal didn't waver, and the Red Lions picked up the Ekwelizer from Africa: Sam Ekwe. Sam Ekwe gave matchup problems to all teams except one: the PCU Dolphins, who have a brigade of big guys not afraid to mix it up down low.

The first two games of the Finals were actually blowouts: San Beda blew out PCU in Game 1, and PCU prevented an early celebration with an ever bigger blowout in Game 2. Game 3 was seeming like an imminent crowning of the Red Lions: the Dolphins were down by 15 points at the start of the fourth quarter. The Dolphins had arguably the better roster: Gabby Espinas, Rob Sanz, Beau Belga and Jason Castro (all 4 played in the pros), but San Beda had the Ekwelizer. PCU, egged by their token contingent of fans, cut the lead to one in the final minute. San Beda turned over the ball. This was looking like the dreaded 1991 Finals versus Mapua, that shot by Benny Cheng Bedans would rather want to forget. Jason Castro had the ball, and he didn't know what to do with it, but to run out the clock and attempt at the last half-second. Castro was well covered. He passed on to Belga, who was just inside the arc -- he released the ball, missed, Yousif Aljamal grabbed the rebound, and 28 years of frustration was over. But grown men still had to cry.

#2: Game 3 of the 2006 UAAP Finals: UST 76, Ateneo 74 in OT
After an epic Game 1 and a downer of a Game 2, no one really knew how Game 3 would be like. Many people expected Ateneo to be back with a vengeance after a weak Game 2. It would be a fitting end for the collegiate careers of Macky Escalona and JC Intal, who had played second fiddle to Ateneo's 2002 championship. UST fans were just all giddy to be even playing in theGame 3 of the Finals.

So the stage was set. First quarter was close; in the second quarter, Ateneo threatened to pull away. The Tigers growled their back to the game in the second half. Down by just 5, the Tiger cause suffered a set back when rookie center Jervy Cruz fouled out. Atenean Macky Escalona was playing the game of his life, finishing the game with a game-high 28 points. In the final minute, Anthony Espiritu scored a trey, then Mark Canlas scored on a put-back. Intal missed on the other hand as the horn sounded to force overtime.

In overtime, neither team pulled away. With the score tied, Intal missed anew. Players from both teams grabbed the rebound, necessitating for a jump ball -- in this case, the possession arrow was used, and it pointed to UST. Eric Salamat fouled the former UAAP juniors MVP June Cortez; Cortez scored the first FT, missed the second intentionally. Ateneo got the rebound but they weren't able to dribble the ball near their court, causing a half-court heave. The coliseum gasped -- it missed. The Tigers are back on top.

Before #1: The rest
Before I give out the #1, lemme show other notable games of the decade, from earliest to the latest:
Fourth-seed playoff of the 2001 UAAP playoffs (NU 108, UE 102 in 2OT): NU qualifies for their still only UAAP Final Four apperance with an upset against UE.
Game of the 2001 UAAP Finals (Ateneo 76, La Salle 72)
Game 1 of the 2002 UAAP Finals (Ateneo 72, La Salle 70): Fonacier blocked Cardona twice.
Game 1 of the 2002 NCAA Finals (SSC-R 79, CSB 78): Baste finally beats CSB in the Finals. They'll later complete their conquest of the Blazers with a blowout Game 2 win.
Game 2 of the 2004 NCAA semifinals (UPHDS 58, San Beda 56): Jerome Paterno misses a gimme lay-up at the dying seconds to give Perps the Finals appearance.
Game 2 of the 2004 NCAA semifinals (PCU 85, Letran 80 in OT): With Ronjay Enrile back, the Knights weren't able to complete the improbable when he missed pressure FTs in the final minutes of OT.
Game 1 of the 2006 UAAP semifinals (Ateneo 76, Adamson 73): With the Eagles up by four, Ken Bono completes a three-point play. Chris Tiu turned the ball over, and Patrick Cabahug had the chance to win the game for the Falcons, but missed. Tiu sealed the game with insurance FTs.
Second-seed playoff of the 2007 UAAP playoffs (La Salle 70, Ateneo 69): La Salle virtually seals their Finals appearance when Ateneo shot a two-pointer rather than a trey as time expired.
Game 1 of the 2006 UAAP semifinals (UST 79, UE 75): June Cortez's three point play put the game away for the Red Warriors.
Game 2 of the 2006 UAAP semifinals (UST 82, UE 71): Another three point play, this time from Jojo Duncil, puts UST up for good; Marcy Arellano's drive to the basket cuts the lead to 1, UST turns the ball over, and Jorel Canizares misses a medium-range jumper.
Game 1 of the 2007 UAAP Finals (La Salle 64, UE 63): Despite Mark Borboran scoring a trey to tie the score, Rico Maierhofer sealed the game with a free-throw (Borboron missed a last-second trey at the dying seconds) to give DLSU a 1-0 series lead.
Game 1 of the 2008 NCAA semifinals (JRU 63, Letran 61): RJ Jazul turned the ball over for like three times costing CSJL the win.
Game 2 of the 2008 NCAA Finals (JRU 62, San Beda 60): This was the game where Jayson Nocom's jumpers were automatic.
Game 1 of the 2009 NCAA Finals (SSC-R 72, San Beda 68 in 2OT): The game where Bedans thought Calvin Abueva used performance-enhancing drugs.

#1: Game 2 of the 2002 UAAP semifinals: Ateneo 72, UE 70
You've probably still had nightmares or daydream this. Ateneo just came off the heels of preventing La Salle a 14-0 sweep, thereby giving the playoffs its usual #1 vs. #4 and #2 vs. #3 format. Ateneo was seeded #3, and they had to win twice over UE led by guys such as Ronald Tubid, James Yap, Paul Artadi, Arnold Booker and a budding KG Canaleta. Ateneo also had a stellar cast: Enrico Villanueva, LA Tenorio, Rich Alvarez, Larry Fonacier and coached by Joel Banal.

The game was hotly contested. In the fourth quarter, it was tied 70-all in the last 7.8 seconds when Artadi turned over the ball. Tenorio raced towards the other end, but Yap (who hadn't met the Atenean Kris Aquino) , who was (and still is) not known for his defense, covered Tenorio. Tenorio found Gec Chia, the intrams star that Joe Lipa didn't use that much in 2001, shook off Ronald Tubid, and released the ball over the outstretched arms of Olan Omiping. The shot went in and Ateneo booked a Finals rematch with La Salle.

2009 yearender: Top 10 international sports stories

International sports fans had a delight of sporting events and the sports scene didn't let up with highlights worth a second look:

#10: Who thought draws were boring?
As long as Charlize Theron hosts, I can tolerate it.

#9: The curse: Pittsburgh steel one from Kurt Warner as he ALMOST wins one
He won one at St. Louis and he almost led another franchise worth scrambled eggs to the Super Bowl. Too bad the people at Pottsville, Pennsylvania cursed the hapless Cardinals. What better team to beat the Cards: a team from Pennsylvania: BR-7's Pittsburgh Steelers.

#8: Spain barely qualifies, then bamboozles
Spain started the EuroBasket 2009 on a bad way -- losing to Serbia by 9, then had a virtual elimination game against host Poland to even qualify for the quarterfinals. They they had to beat unbeaten France in the QF, which they handily did, and they also won the next two games two, including the rematch with Serbia for the championship, where they blew out the hapless Serbs by 22.

#7: Thank God Tim Tebow's mom did not abort him...
Or else Urban Meyer would have sleepless nights on whether to retire or not. Meyer's probably imitating another champion Florida coach -- Billy Donovan.

#6: Tyler Hansbrough wins one for the curly white dudes
Who said white men can't jump? They still can't, but Tyler doesn't need to jump to bring a home crowd of 70,000 at the Ford Field to cry.

#5: Thrilling finish at San Juan
No USA? No problem -- Brazil, Argentina and Puerto Rico gave a Americas Championship to remember. The Puerto Ricans saw the next generation of hoops players Carlos Arroyo is more than happy to leave behind. Too bad they lost by a measly point, but they qualified anyway to the World Championship so... it's still bad. Spain, China and now Puerto Rico were beaten at the Final of their continental championships. I wonder why SBP insists on bidding for one.

#4: Kobe claims what's his, and lets LBJ gets the consolation prize
"Yo LeBron, get that MVP trophy, I'd rather see Bill Russell give me the golden trophy with a ball about to go to the rim -- just like your shots, they never get in."

#3: This SIX it: FC Barcelona
Purists won't call it a sextuple, but those six shiny trophies are the envy of fans around the world. Especially Manchester United and Real Madrid fans.

#2: If you're not into Canadian football...
Just watch:

#1: Mayweather is back, and then some
I dunno if Juan Manuel Marquez wanted a beatdown of epic proportions, but at least he earned big when he made himself Floyd Mayweather's punching bag.

MMVIII: It was so great, Plax shot himself

2008 was the year of the upset: Pacquiao shocking De La Hoya, the Giants upsetting the 18-0 Colts, the Kings winning the title after a 1-7 start, and England fans upset that Becks won't play at Euro 2008.

10. Red Wings paints the town red
Coming off in what could've been the greatest goaltending performance in the 2008 Playoffs, Marc-Andre Fleury was ecstatic to see the series go back to Pittsburgh, but as fate would have, the Detroit Red Wings made it sure that the series won't be coming back to The Joe as they raced to a 2-0 lead and never looked back to make Elle Bishop so happy, she zapped the hell out of Peter Petrelli.

9. Seven-teen!
Boston is the home of champions. The Patriots, the Red Sox, the Eagles, but don't mention the Bruins. The Celtics just came off a season of mediocrity, both on court and on the ping-pong balls mixer, so Danny Ainge pulled the rug, he traded Ray Allen for half of the team. To make it even better, Ainge traded the future for the present: Kevin Garnett. And the rest, they say, and the cliche, is history. Ask Kobe how many points was the lead after game 6 and he'd ask for a calculator.

8. Baste finally brings home the bacon... on the pizza
Ever since the inception of the Shakey's V-League, the San Sebastian Lady Stags had come so near yet so far from the championship, being beaten by UST or Adamson. But on 2008 was different, there was glimmer in the coin, cheese on the pizza, egg on the tapsilog. The time was ripe. And they harvested. Even Denise Tan didn't stand a chance.

7. San Beda completes the Dynas-Three
Every Chinese New Year won't be complete without hopia, those pastries that made the Tsinoys so rich they dumped their money to Ping Lacson's presidential bid. But even the hopia, the Tsinoys have no match to the one and only MVP, and Sam Ekwe. Yeah, there were 14 other dudes in the team, but you'd really have to admit, that without Sam Ekwe, Jeffrey Bombeo won't be able to save them.

6. Michael Phelps wins more golds than Canada
In what could've been the most epic Olympic performance in the history of the games, Phelpistan beat Canada. One person beat an entire country in golds. Heck, one person beat an entire country in medals.

5. "Timo Glock wins the title for Lewis!"
Timo Glock must have thought he was in Oktoberfest, as he dozed up at the final turn of the Brazilian Grand Prix. The crowd was then ecstatic has Felipe Massa clinched the championship, tying Lewis Hamilton with 98 points, but owning the tiebreaker as he won more races, but Lewis overtook Glock, and He gained an extra point, that crucial one point that made him the championship.

After the race, Nicole Scherzinger gave Lewis a performance he'd never forget.

4. Usain Bolt runs away with the gold
You're wondering why I placed this higher than Phelps' record-breaking gold medal haul? Simple. Not everyone can swim, but everyone ran at or least dreamt of running. And if there were "styles" of running, Bolt may well have been able to pad his gold medal haul.

Now if only the Philippines had a crack of winning any medal.

3. The Barangay is on cloud nine
Mark Caguioa was playing in the snow, then he remembered that he was basketball player. Then he came back to the slumping Kings, and electrified the team and led them to the Finals, against the #1 seed: the Air21 Express. And just like the Truth, despite falling down, you'd have to stand up, and... heck who am I kidding? The Express choked.

2. "And a leaping catch is made down at the 25! What a play!"
With the Giants trailing 14-10, with less than 5 minutes left, and in third down, Eli Manning was in tears. His brother choked in the playoffs, Tom Brady has a really hot GF (but Tony Romo could contend that his is hotter), and his team was losing. Then the ball snaps, and three Patriots want to tackle him so bad, so he just threw the ball somewhere. On that somewhere, lay dreaming was David Tyree, caught the ball, and fell down. It was first down. A few plays later, Plaxico Burress saw the future that he will shoot himself so he motioned all of his faculties to catch the ball at the end zone.

The Giants won, 17-14.
But Tom still gets the girl.

1. "Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!"
That came from Chino Trinidad. If it were Diane Castillejo, also known as the greatest sportscaster in the history of sportscasting, bar none, she'd scream

"I LOVE YOU OSCAR!!!!!!"

Something was weird in this bout, and it was not Karylle, or her voice, or her face, or the presence of Dingdong Dantes, or Keisha Cole's TERRIBLE RENDITION OF THE "STAR-SPANGLED BANNER". What's weird on this bout? De La Hoya didn't even throw a punch in the 6th round until the clapper announced there are only 10 seconds left in the round. Next time, boxers are charged for the punches they throw, those that hit are worth more.

(Numbers 11-20 in the coming days)

MMVIII: TV series that makes you want to shake your TV set

2008 has sure been a bane for the TV world. First, the writers want a bigger share of the pie so they had a strike, and of course, everyone else whose job description does not say "producer" has to share their time in showing to the paps their pretty picket signs.

Now when they got what they wanted, they can't think of new ideas so they just ripped off ideas from the past or some other medium, like make the Degrassi girl into the Kansas girl, and now you have 90210; make Bionic Woman's little sis into a really rich kid, and now you have Privileged, and make Pacey into an action star and now you have Dawson Creek goes to hell.

And that goes the same for the local TV industry too. Right, Abby and Meg?

10. "TMZ on TV"
Everyone's favorite celebrity blog not named Perez Hilton, or Just Jared, or Pink is the New Blog, or some other celebrity blog here not named TMZ is now on TV! Harvey Levin makes sure that (1) Alicia Sacramone doesn't lose her 15 minutes of fame, even though she won only a silver, (2) Tom Brady's injury would mean disaster to his opponent's fantasy team, and (3), everyone would still remember who Jamie Lynn Spears is.

9. "Red Eye w/ Greg Gutfeld"
Can your gut handle conservatives being funny? Or seeing some nasty insect inside a skull? Or some really hot and/or cute conservatives? Or finding out the latest on the war on strippers? Or see conservatives make liberals cry they call themselves "progressives"? Then this is the show for you, that is if you're not yet in bed by three in the morning.

8. "How I Met Your Mother"
The premise of "HIMYM" is that Barney Stimson is like his brotha. He's gay, but the thing is, he appears not to be gay, so he seems to be Glenn Quagmire. Only that he is gay. And Buffy's little sis is so cute. And Britney sometimes makes a visit. Or something like that.

Oh, have I told you it's a comedy?

7. "Pushing Daisies"
If there's one thing I learned watching teen flicks, it's that you don't use the pie for self-serving purposes. But the pie-maker dreams of world domination, so he uses pies to resurrect the girl he played hopscotch with who had just died.

Can't get it? Neither does the audience since Pushing Daisies was canceled even before the pie-maker baked his last pie. Now gimme some pie and I'll do something to it...

6. "The Moment of Truth"
Just imagine this as Mo Twister and Rufa Mae Quinto in "Showbiz Central", and that Mark Wahlberg wants to be the Ryan Seacrest of his generation, and that money is actually involved. Big, big bucks. Bigger than Stephon Marbury's Knicks contract.

5. "The Big Bang Theory"
Who says nerds aren't funny? Oh, they always laughed at us. Doesn't matter, because since we're smarter, we can devise ways to lure the female species into our lair. How would the rest of the world find other demographic group to ridicule upon, who are not named Jews, Blacks, gays and redheads?

4. "Ugly Betty"
According to America Ferrera, "shows like Gossip Girl kind of condition us to be mean." She took this philosophy to heart, since she literally rolled over eyes when Blake Lively successfully hijacked the interview to make it "Gossip Girl"- centric.

Hope Georgina wreaks havoc Betty's world someday, or maybe I'd just look for Daniella Valencia.

3. "American Gladiators"
The show that made Mike Adamle a household name the world over. Haven't heard of him? Me too, especially after he "resigned" on WWE RAW. Wait, he became a wrestler? Yep, he was so bad, the fans at the arena when it was his turn to wrestle. Where did they went? To see Hulk Hogan being pinned by Laila Ali. In the "Eliminator". Are sure it's not the "Elimination Chamber"? Heck, the Eliminator is more awesome than the Elimination Chamber, especially if Laila Ali is at the finish line waiting to bust your brains out.

2. "Hannah Montana"
If this isn't #1, then the #1 must have been super-awesome. Like "Gossip Girl", or "iCarly" (hahaha), or "Lobo", despite the seriously gay overtones. But there's something about a female redneck teen living with her redneck dad acting out a female redneck teen living with her redneck dad, while being a pop superstar.

It's like watching Baron Geisler in "Eva Fonda". It's so natural, it's like freshly-squeezed orange juice.

Before we go into the #1 TV show that made TV topple the totalitarian regime of the People's Republic of China, here are the TV shows ranked 20-11:
11. "Eva Fonda" - why would she be ashamed? WHY?!?!?!?!
12. "Dirty Sexy Money" - it's like Gossip Girl on the Upper East Side, only that Gossip Girl is from the Upper East Side
13. "NBA on ABC" - What do you get when you put Stan Van Gundy in the commentators' chair? Unlimited yapping on the greatness that was Mark Jackson.
14. "American Idol" - As I've said before, Season 8 was the single most stupid season in AI history. Probably the reason why RX 93.1 was beaten for the Best FM station in the KBP Golden Glove Awards.
15. "Lipstick Jungle" - this is the reason why Jack Bauer never had a wife. HA!
16. "Ghost Whisperer" - should be changed to "Bewb Whisperer" or something to that effect.
17. "NHL on NBC" - this show is so lowly rated, some affiliates aired the Preakness (that's a horse race) pre-race show. While the game was tied, and in overtime.
18. "Pinoy Fear Factor" - like its canceled American counterpart, PFF is not about the stunts, or the Joe Rogan-esque hosting of Ryan Agoncillo, but it's about the hot women of the show.
19. "Super Bowl XLII" - Marv Albert on the catch that made Tom Brady weep: "Eli Manning out of the shotgun.… He takes it,… facing pressure.… He's in trouble.… He's spun around.… He's able to get away!… Looks to throw.… He does, downfield.… And a leaping catch is made down at the 25! What a play!" (Ironically enough, Marv was calling the play on the radio.) (More on this on the special Top 20 sports events of the year on January 2.)
20. "The Soup" - actually, I dunno which one to put at #20, this one or "The Dish." The Lance Bass factor did it for me.

1. "Lipgloss"
Not since "Love to Love: Jass Got Lucky" has Philippine TV so ripped off a foreign TV show that I'd have to give "Lipgloss" the #1 TV series of 2008. Every character is basically a rip-off of Gossip Girl, to wit:
  • Meg is Serena
  • Abby is Blair
  • Jake is Nate
  • Jiggo is Dan
  • Maui is Chuck
  • Ziggy is Jenny
  • Sarah (not Georgina Sparks) is Vanessa

I'd have to give them props on making some deviations, though:
  • Abby (Blair) got pregnant
  • Maui (Chuck) didn't molest Ziggy (Jenny)
  • Sarah (Vanessa) is sick (a la Peyton Sawyer HAHAHAHAHA)
  • Gossip Girl is gay

But all in all, "Lipgloss" is "Gossip Girl" painted in a different color. So, with that, are the top 10 TV series of 2008. If your grandchildren will ask you, what TV show defined 2008, tell them it's where Princess Ryan's career originated: "Wowowee."

MMVIII: Songs that altered the course of history... or not

On my movies list, an anon said that I have crappy taste in movies. News flash: I haven't watched any of them, OK, probably the #1 movie. Just kidding.

The thing is, these lists aren't the things that I liked, these are the things that made 2008 memorable, at least for yours truly.

So in my songs list, I'd admit one thing: I listened to all of them. Like it's time-consuming to waste 3-4 minutes of your life listening to a song than watching a movie for 2 hours. So, let's dig up the year-end charts with the songs that will make the future generations exclaim with disgust, "WTF music is that?!"

10. "Sex on Fire" by Kings of Leon

This would've made it by its awesome name alone, but it is also an awesome song. It's like "I Will Possess Your Heart" condensed in 4 minutes, short but sweet. Like sex, on fire. Like, a song that is nominated for a Grammy.

9. "7 Things" by Miley Cyrus

This is my obligatory cute girl song. This can make the tweens bounce like basketballs on the New York Knicks practice, only that they don't bounce since they ball hog all practice long.

8. "Apologize" by OneRepublic featuring Timbaland

When you are doing the nasty, this is the last song you'd want to hear. But not Blair Waldorf and Nate Archibald (not the Knicks player).

7. "I Kissed a Girl" by Katy Perry

I thought I saw Katy in that "Galaxy" film whose title was too long I forgot it already. Turns out it was Zooey Deschanel, and she was last seen on Bones' evidence table.

Now, if this song had a male version, it should be sung by Piolo Pascual.

6. "Betamax" by Sandwich

Before the Wii, there was the GameCube. Before the GameCube, the Nintendo 64 (the rest of the world played on the PlayStation). Before the N64, the SNES. Before the SNES, the NES. Before the NES, heck, I dunno. There, I just related the history of video gaming consoles.

And oh, before there was Wowowee, there was Eat Bulaga. Heck, Eat Bulaga still exists.

5. "With You" by Chris Brown

There's something with RNB acts that keep on saying the word "You". And on the video above, he sang it on Nashville, too bad he didn't country-fy it. Like this song. With you, with you, with youuuuuuu. But 2008 won't be complete without a song from Will Tutt and...

4. "Take a Bow" by Rihanna

...Kaitlin Cooper? OK, that girl from one of the Bring It On flicks. The one who like tossed the coin or something (don't tell me how I knew that.) Like I don't even recognize her.

The video above comes from her concert at Manila. Double click the video for the credit.

3. "Decode" by Paramore

I can officially say this: the song is better than the movie. The movie was gay anyway so...

2. "Always Be My Baby" by David Cook

If I ever heard this song again, I'll go mad. Really. Like it's played ad infinitum in jologs stations, Class AB stations, AC stations, CHR stations, oldies stations, heck even on AM stations. Hey at least it's better than the Mariah Carey original.

1. "Womanizer" by Britney Spears

Way back in high school, I lust on Britney all day long. I still do because K-Fed is now dating some volleyball chick. Oh Britney, how the men of the world missed you. Don't ever leave again. And tag along your little sis while you're at it.

MMVIII: Movies that will make Uncle Oscar proud

MMVIII: A lot has happened to the world in 2008, and in keeping up with the tradition on this blog (Yes, there is tradition on this blog), I'm expanding the year-end lists to include movies, TV shows and music that defined 2008.

So what were the movies that made 2008 oh so memorable?

10. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

Ah, is it just my pretty girl bias or does every conyo kid yell "FOR NARNIAAAAAAAA" everytime I see them? Oh Susan, you can shoot arrows to my heart.

9. Iron Man

Ever watched Kiss Kiss Bang Bang? Where Robert Downey, Jr. saved a damsel in distress and it all was like a sick dream or something? Same here. Actually, no, but whatever.

8. Camp Rock

It took me a long time to figure out why the Jonas Brothers were popular. Now I know, because of Demi Lovato! Ha, just my pretty-toothy girl bias again. But really, why are they popular again?

7. A Very Special Love

No, this is not my pretty girl bias. I just felt I'm obligated to reserve at least two local flicks here, and what better movie to represent the local movie industry with this one: it has more cheese than Cheeze Whiz.
(I guess you know what would be the other local movie would be.)

6. Sex and the City

My lawyers advised me not to comment anything about this movie. Really.

5. Quantum of Solace

Two things: Why does Bond look too old, and why does the Bond Girl remind me of the phrase "epic fail"? Heck, she's hot anyway so...

4. High School Musical 3: Senior Year

The end of one of the greatest franchises in movie history not named Scooby Doo had arrived. We won't be seeing Gabriella, Sharpay, Kelsi and the dudes of East High, and the Wildcats team that can give the Tree Hill Ravens a severe beatdown. Especially with the Zac dude, he can guard Nathan Scott like glue loves a clean sheet of paper.
P.S.: I just realized I like the frame YouTube used for the preview. Hahaha.

3. The Dark Knight

If it weren't for one of the Olsen trolls being too smashed not to answer her phone, this film would not have been #2, but maybe #11. Or something. I'm just joking.

2. Twilight

Rob Pattinson! *squee!* KStew! *squee!* Edward+Bella! *squee!* He killed Marissa! *squeeeeeestah!*
Are they done yet? No, of course!
Rayver! *squee!* Shaina! *squee!* Heck, even Perez Hilton is so in love with Rayver Cruz, he threw up like a girl with a hang-over the morning after.

1. My Best Friend's Girlfriend

For some reason, our #1 movie doesn't have a trailer posted at YouTube, which pretty much shows how pathetic this list is. However, if the #2 movie has fangirls squeeing at every word uttered in the movie, fangirls, fangays and fanboys, yes fanboys, were squeeing and panting at every syllable spoken at this movie. Other moviegoers sighed with relief once it was over.

January 10, 2008

2007 in sports, part 2: deaths, money and more chokejobs

We’ve been through choke jobs, upsets, and stupid Lasallians. Now we go through the news that really made 2007 the year you’d never forget.

3. R.I.P. B.A.P., or is it?
Everyone’s most hated basketball association finally got booted out by FIBA after Patrick Baumann realized that the BAP’s sending in AA-listers (lower than Z-listers) in international tournaments is worse than Guinea-Bissau winning the gold medal in men’s basketball.

But lo and behold, BAP is still very much alive and recently appointed (recently-) defeated senatorial candidate Prospero Pichay as its new president. If the Filipino people didn’t want Pichay as senator, then these BAP boys would rather force us people to fathom another crappy (actually, the word “crappy” is too honorable) team in FIBA tourneys.

We’re on the right track and we’ll be sabotaged, hell, screwed by the Taiwanese. Why can’t the government deport Graham Lim already?

2. Pacquiao wants the money
Manny Pacquiao now has a mansion in GenSan. Even Malacanang Palace is no match to this humongous structure… who knows, the value of this piece of property is enough to pay off the Philippines’ debt plus interest.

So instead of focusing on the real prize – the world title – Pac-Man still wants more $$$ so he beat up Jorge Solis. He wants more money so he beat up a named Marco Antonio Barrera. I’m not dissing Barrera but Pac-Man already beat him up already without question there’s no reason to beat him up once more. Now if I were Pac-Man, I’d rather beat-up Juan Miguel Marquez (and then some), since he’s the guy who screwed me up. Granted he’ll be facing Marquez this year but he could’ve bypassed Solis and Barrera and made Marquez sleep.

Perhaps they should add a stipulation: if the match ends in a draw, there’ll be a sudden-death overtime. Knocked down and you’re out. Now that’s prizefighting.

1. The tale of two sweeps
This year has seen two sweeps (undefeated and untied): the UE Red Warriors and the New England Patriots, but the thing is these two teams’ sweeps are different.

In UE’s case, the regular Final 4 format was scrapped for a stepladder format. In first glance this could’ve meant an easier way to the championship but after the complaints of “Araneta or nothing” (blame Fall Out Boy, or Pete Wentz, or Ashlee Simpson), “Two rest days or nothing” (they’re student-athletes, they should study first… so that the Final examination week will coincide with the Finals series) and various other stupidities that’ll make Mensa people cry, UE had a rest period of 21 days, in which it could’ve been cut to as short as 10 days. Indeed, that “rest period” may have caused UE’s chokejob, especially in a relatively short best of 3 series.

Now for everyone’s favorite team, the New England Patriots, the NFL has no special provision if a team sweeps the regular season, they’d still have to go through the playoffs (but a sweeping team would certainly get the wild card bye); this may be a better format even if you’ve swept the season since you won’t have to adjust your tactics and strategies.

Moral lesson: Make sure the “rest period” is no longer than 15 days, use the same format for all situations, and while resting, stop whispering sweet nothings to Tracy Abad.

So was 2007, if you’re looking for Barry Bonds and his drugs, he’s number zero, but since counting down to 10 to 0 is eleven counts, then it wouldn’t be top ten anymore. Maybe for another time…

January 8, 2008

Sports in 2007: drugs, sex, gore and violence - better than your Hollywood movie

When 2007 ended, the sporting world was reeling with cheating, choke jobs, uneventful finales, gore and violence more than actual sporting events and achievements themselves (well these achievements themselves were achieved via cheating, gore and violence so it doesn’t matter if you’d think about it).

10. Mavs eliminated in the first round
Let’s face it, this team is always screwed. Screwed by Tim Donaghy on the 2006 Finals with phantom fouls on D-Wade (pump fake, drive, fall on your opponent and shoot FTs… WTF?). Now they’re screwed by facing the GSW team coached by their former coach Nellie, who practically knows Dirk Nowitzki from his favorite milk brand to his favorite underwear. Oh well, the NBA did this with Portland (remember the 8-on-5 handicap Game 7 against the Lakers?) so everyone knows they’re just being screwed.

9. England and France made it to the semifinals
Two more of those results you didn’t expect that’ll happen: Australia (which just white washed England) and New Zealand were eliminated at the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup. Heck even Prince William forgot about his Queen grandmother when he heard the news.

8. SMC teams lord it over
You must know that the 2006-07 Philippine Cup Finals was screwed. Hey at least they provided like 2 exciting games out of 3 blowouts. But why should Ginebra win? Why?!

7. Game KNB debacle
Now you know they shout “Bobo La Salle.” It’s very well damn true! Lasallians must think Toronto is an American city. I bet they can even point where U.S.A. is on a European map.

6. I can outdo LeBron even while fishing
While the world was watching LeBron single-handedly make the Pistons cry like the Lakers of 2004, Kobe hatched up a scheme even Aaron Burr would be proud: cry to the world you want to be traded while LBJ is wowing the world; the world promptly forgot about LBJ and suddenly all of the Kobe and Lakers fanboys sprouted like mushrooms. Hey at least Tim Duncan made it more boring when they swept the Cavs in June.

5. Hotties falling for playas
First we had the football wives, then Victoria Beckham, then the tsunami followed. Now a no-namer like Marko Jaric got the hottie. Girls must be in it for the $$$

4. Murder or ordinary death?
Even Gil Grissom won’t be able to solve this in 60 minutes. Was Pakistan cricket coach Bob Woolmer murdered or did he die “from natural causes”. Whatever the case, if you can watch a sport that takes like a week to finish then I’ll give you a year’s supply of hotdogs. (OK, the CWC was done using the one-day international format but who knows what does that mean)

The top 3 sporting events tomorrow.

December 31, 2007

Top 10 stupidest events of 2007

As we close out 2007, I reckoned to do what everyone else does, make their top 10 yearender lists. Very original.

10. Kobe crying for a trade when LeeeeeBron* James wrecks havoc on court.
In retrospect, if Kobe got traded to the Bulls, perhaps Scott Skiles wasn't fired.

9. Trying to cry while pinching your eyes.
It sure hurts but it won't make you cry that naturally.

And do you expect me to believe you? Ha!

8. K-Fed wrestling John Cena
Come on, Cena is great. He's better than Hogan, the Rock, Stone Cold, and all of the WWE roster combined. Even include Vinnie Mac. Cena will make mincemeat out of K-Fed.

I mean it.

7. Michael Vick's dogfights
Yes throw away everything to see dogs beat the living hell out of each other (and I mean the living hell). Then eat them for dinner. Yummy.

6. Typhoon Mina can't make up her mind
Hey at least she spared a place that has seen enough of tropical disturbances.

5. "Nothing will happen at 3 o'clock"
Yeah sure did. But something did happen 45 minutes after.

4. Jamie Lynn's not overprotected enough
Perhaps she was singing "Gimme More" when she was doing the deed.

3. Marc Nelson running at the Amazing Race Asia
He can't run for Pete's sake.

2. Manny Pacquiao running for Congressman.
Meesteer Speekir, I moob dat di nominasyun bi klosed.

1. Manny Pacquiao having his own TV show
Heck even Chris Tiu can't save the show as well as he saved the Eagles from elimination...

*BBC pronunciation. They also call Amare "Stoodamire".
